Hydrocodone addiction

Hydrocodone is one of the most commonly prescribed opioids in the country, and one of the most common paths into opioid addiction. If it has become a problem, help is here.

Also known as: Vicodin, Norco, Lortab, vikes

What is hydrocodone?

Hydrocodone is a prescription opioid for moderate to severe pain, often combined with acetaminophen in medications like Vicodin and Norco. Because it is so widely prescribed, dependence often develops after legitimate use for an injury or surgery.

The acetaminophen in these combination pills adds another danger: taking large amounts to chase an opioid effect can cause serious liver damage.

Signs of hydrocodone addiction

  • Needing more to relieve pain or feel the same effect
  • Taking more than prescribed or running out early
  • Seeking prescriptions from multiple doctors
  • Drowsiness, nodding off, or mood changes
  • Withdrawal symptoms when a dose is missed
  • Being unable to stop despite wanting to

Withdrawal and detox

Stopping hydrocodone after regular use brings opioid withdrawal: aches, sweating, chills, nausea, insomnia, and cravings. Medical detox makes this stage safer and more comfortable and is the right way to begin, rather than trying to push through alone.
