Methamphetamine addiction

Meth is one of the most powerful and destructive stimulants there is, and one of the most treatable when a person gets real help. No matter how far it has gone, recovery is possible.

Also known as: meth, crystal, ice, speed, crank

What is methamphetamine?

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant that speeds up the brain and body. It usually appears as a white powder or as clear, glass-like crystals (crystal meth) that are smoked, snorted, swallowed, or injected.

Meth causes a long, intense release of dopamine, the brain's reward chemical. That flood is what makes meth so addictive, and what makes the crash and cravings so severe.

Signs of meth addiction

  • Long periods of wakefulness followed by crashing for days
  • Rapid weight loss and loss of appetite
  • Dental decay ('meth mouth') and skin sores from picking
  • Paranoia, anxiety, hallucinations, or aggression
  • Twitchy, repetitive, or frantic behavior
  • Withdrawing from family and responsibilities
  • Being unable to stop despite the damage it causes

Effects on the body and mind

Meth is hard on nearly every system in the body: it raises heart rate and blood pressure, can cause heart damage and stroke, and takes a heavy toll on the teeth, skin, and weight. Its effect on the mind is just as serious, with paranoia, anxiety, depression, and sometimes lasting psychosis.

Meth withdrawal

Coming off meth brings extreme fatigue, heavy sleep, increased appetite, depression, and intense cravings that can last for weeks. It is rarely physically dangerous, but the depression and cravings are what pull people back, which is why a supportive, structured program matters so much.
