Mushrooms & Hallucinogens addiction
Hallucinogens like psilocybin mushrooms are often treated as harmless, but they carry real psychological risks, and problem use is frequently a sign of a larger struggle with substances. Help is available.
Also known as: shrooms, psilocybin, magic mushrooms
What are mushrooms and hallucinogens?
Psilocybin mushrooms ('shrooms') are one of several hallucinogens, a group that also includes LSD and others. They alter perception, mood, and thought, producing 'trips' that can feel profound or terrifying and are impossible to predict.
Hallucinogens are generally not considered physically addictive in the way opioids or alcohol are, but they can be misused, become psychologically compelling, and cause real harm.
The real risks
- Frightening 'bad trips' with intense fear, paranoia, or panic
- Dangerous behavior while detached from reality
- Triggering or worsening anxiety, depression, or psychosis
- Lasting perception changes (HPPD, or 'flashbacks')
- Using hallucinogens alongside other, more addictive drugs
When it is part of a bigger picture
For many people, hallucinogen use is one piece of a wider pattern of substance use and an attempt to escape or numb something painful. Treatment looks at the whole picture, not just one drug, so real healing can begin.
