Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, teaches the skills to handle intense emotions without turning to substances. For men whose addiction is tangled up with anger, anxiety, or emotional pain, DBT can be life-changing.
What is DBT?
DBT grew out of CBT, but it adds a strong focus on accepting hard emotions while also working to change destructive behavior. That balance, acceptance and change, is the 'dialectic' in the name.
It centers on four skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Together they give a man real tools for the moments that used to send him back to using.
How DBT helps in recovery
- Riding out cravings and crises without acting on them (distress tolerance)
- Understanding and managing overwhelming emotions instead of numbing them
- Staying present rather than spiraling into the past or future (mindfulness)
- Handling conflict and relationships in healthier ways
