Dual Diagnosis (Co-Occurring Disorders)

For many men, addiction does not travel alone. Depression, anxiety, trauma, or other mental health conditions are often part of the picture. Dual-diagnosis treatment addresses both at the same time, because treating only one rarely holds.

What is dual diagnosis?

A dual diagnosis, also called co-occurring disorders, means a person is living with both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder.

These conditions feed each other: people often use substances to cope with untreated mental health symptoms, and heavy substance use makes those symptoms worse. Treating one while ignoring the other usually leads back to relapse.

Why treating both together matters

  • Uncovers the pain or symptoms a man may have been self-medicating
  • Reduces the relapse risk that comes from untreated mental illness
  • Builds healthier coping skills in place of substances
  • Treats the whole person, not just the addiction
