Understanding REBT for a Lasting Recovery

What is REBT?

REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) is a short-term form of psychotherapy that better helps one understand the unhealthy thoughts and beliefs that contribute to their emotional distress. Once these thoughts and beliefs are identified, their rationality can be challenged, and they can ultimately be changed. The result is a replacement of the negative, unproductive thoughts and behaviors, with positive, uplifting thoughts and behaviors. This, in turn, helps individuals to become more successful in both personal and professional relationships. REBT therapy is quite effective in treating a wide variety of conditions.

How It Works

There are three primary techniques used in REBT therapy. The first revolves around problem-solving and helps individuals develop stronger decision-making and conflict resolution skills. The second focuses on cognitive restructuring to identify and change irrational beliefs. This technique often incorporates elements or rationalization, perspective adjustment, and sometimes humor or irony. The third technique is used for the purposes of coping. Certain coping mechanisms such as relaxation, meditation, and hypnosis may be utilized.

Who Can Benefit From REBT?

As with many forms of therapy, REBT treatment can help a wide range of individuals and can be used to address a wide variety of challenges including:

  • aggression
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • addictive behaviors
  • phobias
  • feelings of guilt
  • procrastination
  • sleep problems
